Gwen-Marie Davis, managing partner at GDH Law, was recently recognized by the Maryland Association for Justice for her article on “Preparing a Child for Deposition when they Sometimes Say the “Darndest” Things!” The article was published in the Spring 2018 edition of Trial Reporter magazine, and discusses children in litigation.

When writing her article, she was inspired by ten-year old client who was brutally bitten in the face by a dog in Maryland. The child was nervous and scared during this process and it was important for her to make sure that the the guardian and child was comfortable in a court setting. Preparing a client for deposition is the key part of litigation and children tend to say “darnedest” things, so preparation was the first step in this process. Additionally, it is imperative for an attorney to get on the level of a child and to leave the legal jargon out. Children should never answer questions they do not understand and that know that opposing counsel is not their friend.
