TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE WHILE RIDING YOUR MOTORCYCLE

By: Joseph Dunn, Esq.

It is quite obvious that motorcycle riding is an inherently dangerous activity. However, for many Americans the feeling of riding their motorcycle is worth the risk it presents. If proper precautions are taken, motorcyclists may not only reduce their chance of accidents, but also reduce the risk of being seriously injured if an accident should to occur.

SAFETY GEAR

Motorcycle accidents can occur to even the most careful riders, but wearing the proper gear can help avoid road rash and allow you to walk away still intact if an accident should occur. The key for riders to remember is to actually wear the gear every time they ride their bike. With the weather starting to warm up, riders may want to skip putting on a leather jacket to avoid being too warm. But remember – a little sweat now can prevent a lot of blood later. So wear all of your safety gear all of the time. The most important protective gear includes:

• Helmet
• Eye Protection
• Riding Boots
• Reinforced Jacket
• Reinforced Pants
• Riding Gloves

DEFENSIVE RIDING

There is a saying that says “there are two types of motorcycle riders: those who have been in an accident, and those who will be.” It would be wise to try to stay in the latter group as long as possible. Aggressive driving maneuvers like weaving through traffic or tailgating can dramatically reduce a rider’s ability to react to a dangerous road condition. By always riding defensively and staying alert, motorcycle riders can limit their exposure to danger.

MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE

Before every ride, make sure your bike is in proper working order. Check the lights, horn, turn signals, tire pressure, chain, and last but not least, the brakes. These critical components will help alert other motorists of your presence, alert them to your intentions, and even affect the handling of your bike. Keeping your motorcycle in top condition is just another easy way to help you avoid an accident.

AVOID RIDING IN DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

Rain, snow, or wind may be unavoidable for some riders. However, whenever you have the option to avoid riding in these conditions, you should do so. Road surfaces in these conditions often create slippery conditions and become particularly dangerous for a motorcycle rider.
