Imagine driving down the highway and reaching the kind of traffic slowdown that almost always means there is a traffic crash up ahead. As you work your way up to the crash you ask yourself what possibly could have happened. Was it a drag race gone bad? A teen who got into a crash while texting and driving? As you approach you suddenly realize that something far more stunning has happened. You see a tractor trailer whose cab was cut in half by a violent collision.

This was exactly the scene witnessed by drivers on US 15 in Frederick, Maryland in mid-February. Amazingly, the driver of the tractor trailer survived the ordeal, which saw his truck’s cab become undone from the rig and strike a guardrail, ripping it in half.

Statistically speaking, collisions involving trucks are far more likely to result in serious injury and death than those which only involve passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 3,852 people were killed in truck collisions in 2015. The vast majority of those killed, 69 percent, were riding in passenger cars which collided with large trucks. 16 percent of the large truck crash fatalities were drivers or passengers in the trucks, and 15 percent were motorcyclists, bicyclists, or pedestrians.

That you should drive with care near large trucks may seem obvious, but we thought that the incredible crash mentioned about would serve as a timely reminder of the fact for all of our followers.
